The Civil Services Examination conducted by the Union Public Service Commission of India every year. The pattern of preliminary examination conducted by the UPSC had been changed now and the present pattern is known as CSAT. This change was bring by the UPSC to evaluate the actual ability of a civil servant that he needs at critical situations. It's a test of their moral and ethical value, along with comprehensive test of their analytical ability, their communication and interpersonal skill etc. The change was brought by the UPSC for creating challenging aspirants in the near future. UPSC has changed their pattern to take out the real juice from the crowd.
The examination is conducted for the appointment on various posts as mentioned below.
(i) Indian Administrative Service.
(ii) Indian Foreign Service.
(iii) Indian Police Service.
(iv) Indian P & T Accounts & Finance Service, Group ‘A’.
(v) Indian Audit and Accounts Service, Group ‘A’.
(vi) Indian Revenue Service (Customs and Central Excise), Group ‘A’.
(vii) Indian Defence Accounts Service, Group ‘A’.
(viii) Indian Revenue Service (I.T.), Group ‘A’.
(ix) Indian Ordnance Factories Service, Group ‘A’ (Assistant Works Manager,
Administration).
(x) Indian Postal Service, Group ‘A’.
(xi) Indian Civil Accounts Service, Group ‘A’.
(xii) Indian Railway Traffic Service, Group ‘A’.
(xiii) Indian Railway Accounts Service, Group 'A'.
(xiv) Indian Railway Personnel Service, Group ‘A’.

The pattern of present CSAT examination is as follows:
The Preliminary Examination shall comprise of two compulsory papers of 200 marks each.
Note (i) Both the question papers will be of the objective type (multiple choice questions).
(ii) The question papers will be set both in Hindi and English. However, questions relating to English Language Comprehension skills of Class X level will be tested through passages from English Language only without providing Hindi translation thereof in the question paper.
(iii) Details of the syllabi are indicated in Part A of Section III.
(iv) Each paper will be of two hours duration. Blind candidates will however, be allowed an extra time of twenty minutes for each paper.



The present Syllabus for the CSAT preliminary Examination is follows:
Part-A Preliminary Examination
Paper I - (200 marks) Duration : Two hours
> Current events of national and international importance.
> History of India and Indian National Movement.
> Indian and World Geography - Physical, Social, Economic Geography of India and the world.
> Indian Polity and Governance - Constitution, Political System, Panchayati Raj, Public Policy, Rights Issues, etc.
> Economic and Social Development – Sustainable Development, Poverty, Inclusion, Demographics, Social Sector initiatives, etc.
> General issues on Environmental Ecology, Bio-diversity and Climate Change - that do not
require subject specialisation
> General Science.

CSAT preliminary examination pattern and details update
Paper II- (200 marks) Duration: Two hours
> Comprehension
> Interpersonal skills including communication skills
> Logical reasoning and analytical ability
> Decision-making and problem solving
> General mental ability
> Basic numeracy (numbers and their relations, orders of magnitude,
etc.) (Class X level), Data interpretation (charts, graphs, tables, data sufficiency etc. -
Class X level)
> English Language Comprehension skills (Class X level).
Note 1 : Questions relating to English Language Comprehension skills of Class
X level (last item in the Syllabus of Paper-II) will be tested through passages from
English language only without providing Hindi translation thereof in the question paper.
Note 2 : The questions will be of multiple choice, objective type.
Note 3: It is mandatory for the candidate to appear in both the Papers of Civil Services (Prelim) Examination for the purpose of evaluation.
