Women candidates took the top two posts in the 2010 civil services examination results that were declared on Wednesday. Chennai-based law graduate S Divyadharshini topped the list, followed by computer engineer Sweta Mohanty from Hyderabad. R V Varun Kumar, a Chennai-based dentist, got the third rank, and also emerged as the topper among male candidates.
An exuberant Divyadharshini, who gave the exam the second time this year, said that though she was expecting to qualify this time, the idea of topping the civil services examination had never crossed her mind. “I was expecting good result but not of being the topper,” she said.
Despite not being a cricket fan, Varun watched a documentary on Sachin Tendulkar before the examination. He learnt three important lessons: perseverance, discipline and sincerity. This is the third attempt by the 27-year-old who is also a movie buff. In the recently-concluded Chennai International Film Festival his entry in the review section won the first prize.
For Sweta Mohanty, the daughter of former Andhra Pradesh DGP A K Mohanty, this was the third attempt.
A total of 920 candidates made it to the final list of selected candidates from the 5,47,698 who appeared for the examination. Of these 920, 28 are physically challenged candidates. Of the top 25 candidates, 15 are engineers and five are from medical science background.
At 9th rank, Ajay Prakash, a JNU student, is one of the toppers from Delhi. Pursuing his MPhil in English literature, this was Prakash’s first attempt at clearing the civil services examination. His phone has not stopped ringing since the results were announced. Hoping for a post under IAS, Prakash, who hails from Bihar, wants to “do good work”.
